This  can also be called our sin nature.  It is the capacity and inclination to do those things that can no way commend us to God.  What results from this is what we call total depravity or the complete unmeritoriousness of humans in the sight of God.  If it were not for Jesus Christ and the cross and resurrection, our fate would be spiritual death.  The remedy is this redemption that comes from Jesus as we become a new creation with a new nature to serve Jesus and be in a relationship with him.  The power of the indwelling Holy Spirit gives us victory over the judged sin nature.

ROMANS 6:6- WE KNOW THAT OUR OLD SELF WAS CRUCIFIED WITH HIM IN ORDER THAT THE BODY OF SIN MIGHT BE BROUGHT TO NOTHING, SO THAT WE WOULD NO LONGER BE ENSLAVED TO SIN. 

ROMANS 7:17-18- SO NOW IT IS NO LONGER I WHO DO IT, BUT SIN THAT DWELLS WITHIN ME.  FOR I KNOW THAT NOTHING GOOD DWELLS IN ME, THAT IS, IN MY FLESH.  FOR I HAVE THE DESIRE TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT, BUT NOT THE ABILITY TO CARRY IT OUT. 

2 CORINTHIANS 4:4- IN WHOSE CASE THE GOD OF THIS WORLD HAS BLINDED THE MINDS OF THE UNBELIEVING SO THAT THEY MIGHT NOT SEE THE LIGHT OF THE GOSPEL OF THE GLORY OF CHRIST, WHO IS THE IMAGE OF GOD.  

TO PUT OFF THE OLD SELF, WHICH BELONGS TO YOUR FORMER MANNER OF LIFE AND IS CORRUPT THROUGH DECEITFUL DESIRES. EPHESIANS 4:22

Definition: Also and more accurately called sin nature. This is the fallen nature we enter the world with.  It can be referred to as the original sin.  The sinful tendencies, desires, and dispositions in our hearts.  We are morally ruined at birth and are in absolute need of Jesus.  This results in the total depravity and spiritual death of all humans.  The remedy is redemption from Jesus Christ and the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit to give us victory over the judged sin nature.
